In November last year, allrounder Nitish Reddy was presented with his maiden Test cap by Virat Kohli for the Perth match in the Border Gavaskar Trophy. Fast forward 11 months, Reddy made his debut in national colours in the ODI format against Australia, this time getting his cap from former captain Rohit Sharma.
“Cap No. 260: Nitish Reddy. Welcome to the club. You’ve had a great start to your career. And it’s only because of how you want to play the game and your attitude. I am 110% sure that with that attitude, you are going to go a long way in this Indian team. You are going to be an all-format great which I believe thoroughly because like you said in your speech yesterday, you want to be everywhere. And that is where where we all want you to be. So good luck. I am 110% sure that the team will rally around you. Anything you need, anytime you need anything, everyone will be there to support you. Good luck. Have a great career,” Rohit said while presenting Reddy with the cap ahead of the 1st ODI vs Australia on Sunday.
In the match, Nitish came in to bat at No. 8 and showed a glimpse of his talent when he slammed 19 from 11 including 2 sixes and stayed unbeaten as India posted 136/9 in a rain-truncated encounter which went down to 26-overs per side.

It was here in 2024 that Nitish Kumar Reddy earned his Test cap. It was @imVkohli then who presented it and this time it is @ImRo45, who handed the ODI cap. 🧢#AUSvIND | #TeamIndia | @NKReddy07

Rohit and Virat’s comebacks were cut short when both stalwarts were sent back for 8 and 0 respectively. Captain Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer could only score 10 and 11 before KL Rahul and Axar Patel dragged the Men in Blue out of a sticky situation with 31 and 38 respectively.
Ultimately, it was all for naught as Australia with the help of an unbeaten 46 from skipper Mitchell Marsh chased down a revised target of 131 as per the DLS method to take 1-0 lead in the 3-match series. The next ODI match is at Adelaide followed by the third in Sydney.
