THIS is the terrifying moment a woman is stabbed by a stranger while walking to work, with the unprovoked attack caught on CCTV.
Sushi chef Wan Lai, 26, was walking near the intersection of Little Bourke Street and Spencer Street in the CBD district of Melbourne, Australia, at around 7.40am on October 2, when her attacker struck.
The CCTV footage shows a woman is seen running up behind her, when she pulls out a knife, looks her in the eye and then stabs Ms Lai once on the right side of her chest, before fleeing.
Horrified bystanders rushed to help her just seconds after she sunk to her knees while clutching at her bleeding wound on the pavement.
Ms Lai suffered a punctured lung in the attack.
Police and passersby helped her until paramedics arrived and she was rushed to hospital.

The alleged attacker was caught on other CCTV cameras as she appears to run down various side streets.
A police spokesperson said Ms Lai’s injuries were non-life threatening.
It’s believed she was hospitalised for three days while police hunted for her alleged attacker.
A spokesman said: “Police conducted an extensive search of the area, arrested a woman and seized a knife.
“A 32-year-old Melbourne woman was charged with intentionally causing injury and committing an indictable offence while on bail.”
Ms Lai said she felt someone touching her lower back before she was stabbed.
She suffered a hemopneumothorax, causing blood and air to build up around the lung making it hard to breathe.
Ms Lai’s sister told 7News the alleged attack could have been fatal.
Ivana told the news outlet: “She turned to her right this time and there was someone there — but what if she turned to her left? It could have been her heart.”
Ms Lai has not be able to work since suffering her injuries and has said she feels unsafe in her old neighbourhood.
Following the alleged attack she has moved from her old residence into a new home, where she feels safer.
Her sister added that Ms Lai “doesn’t dare to go out anymore”.
She added: “She can’t stand people walking behind her and keeps looking around nervously.” The alleged offender appeared in the Melbourne Magistrates Court the day after the incident and has been remanded in custody until her next appearance.
