Man Utd secured a 2-1 win against Liverpool in the Premier League and Ruben Amorim reflected on the display.
Ruben Amorim listened to his “gut” to pick his Manchester United team against Liverpool.
Amorim secured the biggest win of his tenure at Old Trafford against Liverpool, with Harry Maguire scoring a late match-winner after an equaliser from Cody Gakpo.
Bryan Mbeumo opened the scoring within just two minutes at Anfield. Liverpool fought back and struck the post three times as they tried to respond, eventually drawing level in the 78th minute of the game.
But United had the last laugh as Maguire headed home in the 84th minute to secure a special victory for United.
Speaking after the game, Amorim said: “I think we started really well, we had a great spirit, we didn’t play well with the ball, we created chances, we suffered some chances also, we lost a bit of composure in the second half.
“We managed it well when we lost the ball. It was a great win, not a very well played game from our part, but a great spirit and that is the only thing I can ask.”
Speaking about winning back-to-back league games for the first time, Amorim said: “Of course it is really important. I don’t have many wins in Manchester. It is really important back-to-back, every detail of this game, the spirit when we suffer a bad moment or control, all the small things were perfect.
“Let’s try to do that next week. It is really important for our fans, they struggle against Grimsby and Brentford and today they saw a different team”
Amorim made two changes after winning against Sunderland, including the recall of Maguire. “Especially in the bad moments, you have to go with your gut,” he said about his selection.
“That is the most important thing for a manager and then sometimes you have a player in a bad moment and understand it is not for him and take him out for a game.
“Sometimes the characteristics of the game change the way we approach it. [Matheus] Cunha in the middle, if we put Ben [Sesko], it is easier for this kind of centre-backs to control our striker. This kind of game when we win, the coach is so smart and when we lose the problem is the manager.”
United are now just two points behind Liverpool in the table. “I want you guys to continue with the narrative that you are so I will not increase the goal,” said Amorim.
“What we need to do is try to win three games in a row and then forget about top four, top six, we already said we want to go to Europe. This doesn’t change anything, we are the same team we were 90 minutes ago.”
Amorim was asked whether United are now through the “storm” and said: “I have no idea. If we show the spirit we show every day I think we are going to win so many games, but for that we need to show action.”
