DRONE footage reveals a bygone Soviet island stronghold has now been overrun by a different kind of bear.
Polar bears have swarmed Kolyuchin Island in Russia’s Chukchi Sea, with dozens of the furry apex predators roaming through the ruins of the abandoned weather station.
The island was abandoned in the early 1990s, after the collapse of the Soviet Union, leaving the buildings open fodder for the Arctic giants.
New drone footage from travel blogger and film maker Vadim Makhorov shows the sleuth of polar bears living inside the deserted research station.
The video shows the creatures approaching the camera, looking through windows and exploring the island.
One of the bears even tried to catch the drone as it approached.

The family of bears seem to have made the north-eastern island their home.
Makhorov spoke to Reuters about his discovery.
“I think they see these houses as shelter from the wind, rain and other things,” he said.
“In general, they get along fine there.”
The videographer posted videos of the bears to his Instagram, and revealed they weren’t the only animals he’d seen during his drone exploration.
“Not far from the houses is a bed of walrus, and about 20 bears (if not more) are actively running around on the island itself,” he said.
“Interesting neighbourhood!”
The Russian island is not the first place to be claimed back by nature’s creatures.
In Germany, a tyrannical group of raccoons invaded the central city of Kassel.
Shocking footage showed more than a dozen of the dumpster-diving beasts roaming the streets.
The masked-up family rampaged through the town, rummaging in bins scavenging for food scraps.
Although native to America, in 1934, Wilhelm Freiherr Sittich von Berlepsch, the head of the local forestry office, released a pair of raccoons into the wild, to “enrich” local wildlife.
The so-called masked-bandits have been causing mayhem every since.
More than 30,000 roam the German city, with experts in 2024 estimated the national raccoon population could soon reach one million.

With cities offering lots of food and shelter, people living in Kassel have long been forced to share their space with the raccoons.
The nocturnal omnivores take over the parks and streets, climb into chimneys, garden sheds or attics, and raid bins and gardens in search of food.
