Bryan Mbeumo’s form for Manchester United has proven a number of people wrong after his big-money move from Brentford
Wayne Rooney has admitted that Manchester United summer signing Bryan Mbeumo has ‘proved him wrong’ after his £71million move from Brentford.
Mbeumo was one of United’s biggest signings before the 2025/26 season. After scoring 20 Premier League goals last term, the 26-year-old joined Ruben Amorim’s side after weeks of negotiations.
So far, Mbeumo has scored two Premier League goals for United and he was on the scoresheet in Sunday’s 2-1 win over Liverpool. The forward latched onto Amad’s through ball inside the first minute before beating Giorgi Mamardashvili.
Cody Gakpo drew the Premier League champions level in the 78th minute before Harry Maguire netted a winner to earn United their first victory at Anfield in nearly 10 years.
Previously, Rooney admitted he was ‘sceptical’ of Mbeumo’s ability to thrive at Old Trafford. But after being one of Amorim’s most dangerous players, the former United striker has admitted he has been proven wrong.
“For me he [Mbuemo] has been Manchester United’s standout players this season and he hasn’t got his rewards for his hard work and the sacrifices he’s made for the team,” he said on his BBC Podcast.
“It was a great goal. I’ll be honest I was a bit sceptical when United signed him, I don’t know if he had the ability to come and play for Manchester United, but he’s proved me wrong.
“I think he’s been a great addition to the team and by far United’s best player of the season.”
Rooney also heaped praise on Amorim after he recorded back-to-back Premier League victories for the first time since replacing Erik ten Hag last November. “It’s such a huge win for the manager,” he added.
“I’ve questioned decisions, I’ve questioned tactics, I’ve questioned players’ desire over this season and last season. That win is massive. To win at Anfield is not easy to do.
“The confidence that gives the players and the managers, I’ll be the first to say he got it absolutely spot on. I hope we see more of it. Two points off Liverpool now. I really like the performance and we know the players can do it, we have to see this on a consistent level.”
